I found my self watching the news more and more. There seems to be more bloggers that talk about food than anything else. The one that caught my attention was a story about a food blogger calling Subway out on the ingredients used in their bread. There are are over 50 ingredients that make up Subway's bread. The the one ingredient that the the food blogger focused on was the same ingredient used to make plastic shoes and yoga mats. The bloggers story can be found on he Charlotte observer (blogger babe). Subway should consider changing its name from " Eat fresh"

What an interesting topic! I checked out the food babe website and was pretty amazed. This type of talk seems to be (please pardon the cliche) "all the rage" right now. There was just the story of McDonald's and the pink slime. Taco Bell has been under scrutiny for awhile due to the lack of meat in their meat. At least once a month we seem to be hearing about something like this. It makes me not want to eat out at all!
ReplyDeleteThis would also be a great topic for students to research. What better way to fight obseity than to get the students to realize that their beloved McDonald's/Burger King/Subway/etc is not only unhealthy, but potentially dangerous?! I know that students are subject to the food that their parents buy and make, but if you can get the students learning and talking, maybe they can relay the information to their parents. From there it could become a snowball effect - the parents are realizing what they are having their children eat, and start to provide better options (with the occasional cheat, of course :)). This is definitely my "high hopes" talking, but it could be worth a shot.
I recall this gym mat chemical ingredient story. I remember telling my students that it's a matter of phraseology that makes you eat what you shouldn't eat, drink and do what you shouldn't or should--is this not, in a sense, rhetoric?--or at least covert jargon? MSG: what is that? Flavor additive. Until someone tells you what it really is: excitotoxin that leads to a host of health problems. So: what makes doritos taste so darn good is also a culprit in obesity and other health risks.
